Week One of the Youth Walkers Pedometer Challenge 2013 kicked of last week with forty- three young people across five youth groups taking part in the four week step counting challenge run by Waterford Sports Partnership and funded by Waterford Leader Partnership. Groups taking part this year include the Tramore “Tramovers” Youth and Family Project, the Midway “Marching Mad Yokes” Project Portlaw, the Northern Suburbs “Grace Dieu Groovers” Community Youth Project, St. Pauls Autistic Unit and Manor St .John Youth Services.
Groups were given step counters, high vis vests and an introductory walking workshop which covered benefits of walking, different types of walking, safety while walking and how to use a step counter. Groups taking part are encouraged to plan and take part in a walk during their weekly meeting while tracking their step count so that they can feel motivated to increase their activity, get some fresh air, work as a team, enjoy their local surroundings and have fun! Once the groups knew what they were at they took to the great outdoors to start clocking up those steps! The Tramovers hit the beach while The Midway Marching Mad Yokes took a scenic country walk and the Grace Dieu Groovers walked to the local school.
At the end of week one, the leader board looks like this with the Grace Dieu Groovers in the lead on 4760 steps! The race is on to see which group will have the highest average step count overall at the end of the challenge! Who will win the challenge trophy that the Midway Marching Mad Yokes held in 2012? Watch this space to find out!
