The Active Body Active Mind (ABAM) Programme for Traveller Men got underway on Monday 17th February, there are six men taking part.
This five week programme is being run by Waterford Sports Partnership in conjunction with the Traveller Interagency Group which includes County Waterford Community Forum and the Dungarvan Traveller Project. Sessions are delivered every Monday and Wednesday with the aim of improving the participants' lifestyle management skills and giving them an opportunity to try out different physical activities available locally.
The first activity the group got a chance to try out was boxing, the session was run by Killian Walsh of Dungarvan Boxing Club. The participants were given a physical fitness test on strength and aerobic capacity. The participants will be retested on programme completion to monitor for improvements. Killian was very impressed with the groups enthusiasm and said ‘well done to the lads on a great effort and I'm looking forward to our boxing session next week. It’s a pleasure to train people who are genuinely interested and happy to be there.’
On Wednesday 19th February the group underwent health screenings and enjoyed a nutrition talk from Audrey Hallahan. The participants will be re-screened on programme completion to monitor for improvements.
Over the next four weeks the group will take part in sessions in the following activities: Boxing (Dungarvan Boxing Club), Circuits, Fishing (St Paul's Fishing Club), Gym/Fitness Induction (Bioactive Gym) and Rugby (Dungarvan Rugby Club).
