Waterford Team win at Go For Life Games

Congratulations to the Waterford team who won the Lobbers event at the Go For Life Games on Saturday 8th June in Dublin City University!

The Go for Life Games is a yearly event organised by Go For Life, Age & Opportunity and the Irish Sports Council which is supported on the ground by Local Sports Partnerships. The aim is to provide an opportunity for enjoyable and social physical activity participation among older adults.
The Waterford team was one of fourteen from around the country that participated in three indoor ball games including ‘Lobbers’ (adapted from petanque and boules), ‘Flisk’ (adapted from horseshoe pitching), and ‘Scidils’ (adapted from ten pin bowling). The team was selected following a training event held by Waterford Sports Partnership, with players spanning a range of groups including Cappoquin Active Retirement Group, Waterford Area Stroke Support Group and Respond. Representing Waterford on the Lobbers team were Mary O’Donohoe, Catherine Chester, Helen Elliott and Noel Lanigan. The Flisk team members were Gerrard Rea, Lucy Webb, Maura Fanning and Sally Walsh. Skidils players included Monica O’Sullivan, Denis O’Reilly, Valerie Delaney and Theresa Walsh. The practice paid off for our Lobbers team, who were announced as the winners of their event and awarded with Go for Life mugs!  

The Games were a great opportunity to celebrate physical activity and sport participation for all ages, the Waterford team thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere, friendly competition and social element of the day. Lucy Webb from the Flisk team said “I really enjoyed the day and made many new friends”, Mary O’ Donohue from the Lobbers team echoed the importance of the social aspect of the Games in saying “There is no need for anyone to be lonely, just join in and go for life!”

Well done to the Waterford team for representing their county with enthusiasm, sportsmanship and skill! We can’t wait for the Go for Life Games 2014!
